Byers Jr., Edward J.
Edward J. Byers Jr., formerly 616 10th Ave., Coralville, died Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2009, at the Iowa City Rehabilitation & Health Care Center following a long illness. Visitation will be Friday from 10 to 11 a.m. at Lensing's Oak Hill, 210 Holiday Rd., Coralville. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. at Lensing's Oak Hill, with the Rev. Doug Williams officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Coralville, with military graveside rites provided by the Coralville American Legion.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Coralville United Methodist Church or Iowa City Hospice.
Ed was born Oct. 22, 1918, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Edward and Mary (Fenton) Byers.
Raised in Cedar Rapids, Ed received his bachelor's degree in microbiology from the University of Iowa. He worked as a microbiologist for the University of Iowa State Hygienic Lab for over 30 years, retiring in 1980.
He married C. Virginia Austin on May 27, 1941, in Cedar Rapids. During World War II, Ed served in the Army Air Force as a sergeant from 1942–1947. Ed was a member of Coralville United Methodist Church and a life member of Coralville Noon Optimist Club.
Survivors include his son, Edward J. Byers III (Sue) of Riverside; a grandson, Troy Byers (Roma) of Coralville; granddaughter, Kimberly Rosenberg (Shane) of Middle Amana; a great-granddaughter and four great-grandsons.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Virginia in 2003; and a brother, Walter.
