Jack was born June 30, 1925, in Iowa City, the son of Lawrence A. and Jessie B. (Hammer) Yanausch. Jack grew up in Iowa City and attended Iowa City schools. He married Virginia V. Strub on June 9, 1947, in Rock Island, Ill. Jack and Virginia made their home in Iowa City, where he was employed as manager of the Whiteway Market for 25 years. He then entered into real estate with Pearson Realtors and later with Lepic-Kroeger Realtors as a licensed broker from 1963 to 2001, when Jack retired.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Johnson County Historical Society, Iowa City Board of Review for 32 years, and past president of the Iowa City Board of Realtors. Jack enjoyed traveling throughout the U.S. with his wife, bowling, playing pool, and was a avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and St. Louis Cardinals.
Jack also enjoyed time spent with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren, who affectionately called him "Popo." His family will remember him for his teasing, magic tricks and jokes, as well as the fun-filled family reunions he organized year after year. Jack was Santa Claus to family and friends for over 40 years.
Jack is survived by his loving wife, Virginia; one daughter, Helen J. Gordon; four grandchildren, Todd A. (Karla) Smith, Steve M. Gordon, Mary Beth Kokjohn and Heather L. (Dana) Holeman; nine great-grandchildren, Megan, Jared (Kelsey), Kathryn, Kailyn, Rebecca, Christina, Jacquelyn, Avery and Aria; and great-great-grandson, Owen.
