Richard A. Polansky, 83, of DeWitt, died Monday morning, Oct. 8, 2018, at Genesis Medical Center-East Campus, Davenport.
Richard Allen Polansky was born Aug. 9, 1935, in Cedar Rapids, to the late Charles Louis and Evelyn Marie (Kime) Polansky. He graduated from Roosevelt High School, Cedar Rapids, in 1953, from Iowa State Teacher's College in 1957 and went on to earn his master's degree from the University of Iowa. Richard began teaching in DeWitt in 1961 and also served as the wrestling coach for many years. He went on to serve as business administrator for the school district until retirement in 1997.
He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt, serving as Sunday school superintendent and elder; the DeWitt Noon Lions Club, founding its travelogue; DeWitt Community Hospital Board; a director for Iowa Boys State and served on the school board. As an avid golfer, Richard was longtime member of Springbrook Country Club. He enjoyed poetry, woodworking, fishing, especially trips to Canada, and spending time with his family.
Surviving are his sons and daughters-in-law, Paul and Denise Polansky of Cedar Rapids and Matthew and Sally Polansky of Atkins; stepsons and daughters-in-law, Steven (Virginia) Wisehart of Clark, Mo., and Mark (Janell) Wisehart of Salida, Colo.; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; and siblings, Charles Polansky and Sandy (Greg) Ghere of Cedar Rapids.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Virginia, on Dec. 25, 1983; his wife, Jaquelyn, on May 21, 2018; and his grandson, Clayton Wisehart.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt, with the Rev. Ron Rafferty officiating. Burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery, DeWitt.
Memorials are suggested to Grace Lutheran Church, R. A. Polansky wrestling endowment or DeWitt Noon Lions.
Pallbearers will be Jim Hetrick, Charlie Kimball, Brad Anderson, Roger Hill, Dick Kelly and Jon Billhorn. Honorary pallbearers will be Bud Selk and Jack Scott.
