Area capsules for Week 3 of the high school football season:
IOWA CITY WEST at CEDAR RAPIDS WASHINGTON
* Site and time: 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Kingston Stadium
* Records and rankings: West is 1-1; Class 4A third-ranked Washington is 2-0.
* Overview: Washington expected to be an explosive crew, and has lived up to it in the first two games, registering 43 and 41 points, respectively. The teams have a common opponent in Cedar Rapids Kennedy; West rallied by the Cougars 12-9, then Washington handled them 41-7. Tavian Patrick has rushed for 190 yards for the Warriors, while QB Reid Snitker has been accurate and effective, completing 67 percent of his passes for 188 yards. West hasn't scored a lot of points (18 in two games), but has put up impressive passing numbers: Aaron Bleil has thrown for 413 yards, including 168 (in 16 receptions) to sophomore Oliver Martin.
SOLON at CEDAR RAPIDS XAVIER
* TV: KCRG 9.2
* Site and time: 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Saints Field
* Records and rankings: Third-ranked Solon is 2-0 overall, 0-0 Class 3A District 4; No. 2 Xavier is 1-1, 0-0.
* Overview: These traditional powers meet on the gridiron for the first time, and it figures to be a dandy. Solon started its season with an overtime victory over Iowa City Regina, ending the Regals' 56-game winning streak, then fought past Mount Vernon last week. Xavier bounced back from a Week 1 loss at West Des Moines Dowling by getting a huge defensive effort in a 30-6 triumph over Davenport Assumption. Xavier begins its 3A district era after finishing second in 4A each of the last two years. The Saints will be challenged by Solon playmakers like Connor Ham and Brandon Kramer.
LINN-MAR at CLINTON
* Site and time: 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Clinton
* Records and rankings: Class 4A No. 10 Linn-Mar is 2-0; Clinton is 1-1.
* Overview: Linn-Mar has been the surprise of the Metro through the early stages of the season, already matching its win total from a season ago, and has been rewarded with a state ranking. A defense that was gashed to the tune of 42 points per game last season ranks third in 4A this year with 11.5 allowed per game. The Lions' offense has been productive behind Ryan Schmidt (190 yards passing, 121 rushing with six TDs) and Perrion Scott (140 rushing yards). The Lions will be heavily favored to prevail on the river and take a 3-0 mark into next week's battle with Cedar Rapids Washington.
CEDAR RAPIDS PRAIRIE at DUBUQUE SENIOR
* Site and time: 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Dubuque (Dalzell Field)
* Records and rankings: Prairie is 1-1; Senior is 0-2. Both teams are unranked.
* Overview: After a humbling Week 1 loss to Linn-Mar, Prairie was able to grind out a 17-14 win over Cedar Rapids Jefferson last week and avoid an 0-2 start. Sam Drysdale's field goal was the difference, and the Hawks were able to make some key defensive stops late. Keagan Pinter has developed into a reliable back, rushing for 244 yards in two games. Trey Beckman has passed for 365 with a balanced receiving crew. Senior has opened with wins over Dubuque Wahlert and Waterloo West, and this will be the Rams' toughest test thus far.
CEDAR RAPIDS KENNEDY at NORTH SCOTT
* Site and time: 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Eldridge
* Records and rankings: Kennedy is 0-2; Class 4A seventh-rated North Scott is 2-0.
* Overview: It gets no easier for Kennedy, which has opened with a challenging schedule. The Cougars, who have managed just 16 points in two games, take on a Lancers outfit that is allowing just 12 per game. Tyler Dralle has scored both of the Cougars' touchdowns. North Scott has exhibited a balanced run-pass attack; Matt Sacia has passed for 294 yards and rushed for 121 while Jacob Ridgeway has rushed for 174 yards and three touchdowns.
MARION at CASCADE
* Site and time: 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Cascade
* Records and rankings: Both teams are 1-1. Cascade is ranked 10th in Class 2A.
* Overview: Marion faces an excellent quarterback for the second straight week. After yielding 209 passing yards to Washington's Daryn Sebelius last week, the Indians take on Cascade's aerial assault, led by Derek Lieurance, who has completed 72 percent of his passes for 510 yards. Nate Bergfeld is his favorite target with 16 catches and 315 yards. Marion Coach Tony Perkins needs one win to tie Les Hipple atop the school's all-time wins list. Kory Walsh has rushed for 126 yards and four TDs for the Indians.
SIGOURNEY-KEOTA at IOWA CITY REGINA
* Site and time: 7 p.m. Friday, at Regina
* Records and rankings: Both teams are 1-1 overall, 0-0 Class 1A District 6. Regina is ranked No. 2.
* Overview: Regina certainly showed bounce-back capabilities last week, rebounding from its Week 1 loss to Solon by handling a fine Cascade outfit, 38-14. Nick Phillips is a big-play guy for the Regals; he is averaging 19.9 yards per carry (eight for 159) and already has 16 receptions (for three touchdowns). Sigourney-Keota split a pair of pre-district games vs. Class A competition, beating BGM before falling to Pekin. Peyton Crawford has rushed for 152 yards for the Savage Cobras.
AMES at IOWA CITY HIGH
* Site and time: 7 p.m. Friday, at Bates Field
* Records and rankings: Ames is 1-1; City High is 0-2. Both teams are unranked.
* Overview: Kudos to these athletics departments for setting up this series on the eve of Iowa-ISU. These teams have a common opponent in Cedar Falls, which beat City High 14-0 and lost to Ames 24-10, City High has mustered just 17 points in two games and has gone to a pass-dominated attack led by Nate Wieland (50 of 82, 412 yards, two TDs). Ames likes to throw it as well; Colby Shane leads the state (all classes) with 24 receptions in two games, for 236 yards and three touchdowns.
CEDAR RAPIDS JEFFERSON at DAVENPORT NORTH
* Site and time: 7 p.m. Friday, at Davenport (Brady Street Stadium)
* Records and rankings: Jefferson is 0-2; North is 1-1. Both teams are unranked.
* Overview: After coming up a field goal short from a potential momentum-setting victory, Jefferson goes back to the drawing board. The J-Hawks figure to be heavy favorites in this one against a team that had been among the worst in the MAC. Jefferson QB Jesse Furrow ranks seventh in 4A passing, with 437 yards in two games. Bryce Lund caught five passes for more than 140 yards in the 17-14 loss to Prairie. North split its first two games, beating Davenport West and falling to Clinton.
WEST DELAWARE at WAVERLY-SHELL ROCK
* Site and time: 7:30 p.m. Friday, at Waverly
* Records and rankings: Both teams are 2-0 overall, 0-0 Class 3A District 3. West Delaware is rated No. 4; WSR is ninth.
* Overview: The three-team round robin (which also includes Decorah) that likely will determine the 3A-3 champ begins as district play kicks off. West Delaware has ripped through its first two games behind running back Coy Roussell (369 yards, six touchdowns) and a defense that has allowed just 14 points. Waverly-Shell Rock lit up a pair of 4A opponents (Waterloo West and Mason City) in the pre-district portion of its schedule. Junior backs Riley Steckelberg and Ryan Sprain have combined for 320 rushing yards and six TDs for WSR.
NORTH FAYETTE VALLEY at CENTER POINT-URBANA
* Site and time: 7:30 p.m. Friday, at Center Point
* Records and rankings: Both teams are 2-0 overall, 0-0 Class 2A District 3. NFV is rated second.
* Overview: The premier district in Class 2A kicks off, and this is the keynote game of opening week. CPU has been the league's most pleasant surprise to this point, outlasting Clear Creek Amana in double overtime, then handling Union 32-12 last week. Brandon Kinsey has been the workhorse, carrying the ball 65 times for 277 yards and five touchdowns. North Fayette Valley has handled a pair of 3A foes (Decorah and Independence), giving up just 14 points in the process. Josh Mackey has rushed for 222 yards and three TDs.
WILLIAMSBURG at MEDIAPOLIS
* Site and time: 7:30 p.m. Friday, at Mediapolis
* Records and rankings: Both teams are 2-0 overall, 0-0 Class 2A District 5. Mediapolis is ranked sixth, Williamsburg No. 8.
* Overview: It's probably not too early to proclaim this winner as the team with the inside track in the 2A-5 title chase. Mediapolis has been one of the brightest programs in southeast Iowa in recent years and has another fine team, but this will be by far the Bulldogs' stiffest test to date. Mitchell Stahl has rushed for 264 yards and three touchdowns for Williamsburg, which moves down a class from 3A. Cole Erickson leads Mediapolis, which has scored 89 points in two games, with 162 rushing yards and three TDs.
OTHER GAMES INVOLVING METRO/IOWA CITY TEAMS
