Iowa boys' basketball substate finals: Tuesday's scores, stats and more

The final tickets to the 2019 Iowa high school boys' state basketball tournament were punched Tuesday night, including all eight bids in Class 4A.

Here's a look at Tuesday's scores, including extended coverage.

Class 4A

Substate 1

No. 3 Sioux City East 67, Sioux City West 62

The Black Raiders (20-1) are state bound for the 20th time after beating city rival West (17-4) for the third time this season.

Substate 2

Ames 63, No. 10 Des Moines North 54

The Little Cyclones (17-4) used a 28-point fourth quarter to head to state. The Polar Bears close at 18-5.

Substate 3

No. 7 Cedar Falls 58, Linn-Mar 45

The Tigers led by one at halftime, then outscored Linn-Mar 15-0 in the third period and salted the game away from the foul line in the fourth quarter, earning a trip back to Des Moines to defend their 4A title with a 58-45 win at the U.S. Cellular Center.

Cedar Falls (18-3) avenged a loss to the Lions in the regular season. Coach Ryan Schultz's Tigers used a balanced offense and third-quarter shutout to end the Lions' season at 15-6.

Substate 4

No. 6 Dubuque Senior 64, No. 1 Bettendorf 55

Noah Carter poured in 30 points and Senior (17-3) knocked off top-ranked Bettendorf (21-2) to get to state.

D.J. Carton led the Bulldogs with 27 points and eight assists.

Substate 5

No. 2 North Scott 55, No. 5 Cedar Rapids Prairie 40

When these teams met to begin the regular season way back in late November down near the Quad Cities, Prairie led most of the way before falling late.

Tuesday night in the postseason, the Hawks never led. So their great season is over.

North Scott scored the first six points of the game and never trailed in a very impressive 55-40 win.

Substate 6

No. 8 Iowa City West 72, Davenport Central 46

Davenport Central Coach Craig Wurdinger knew his team would have to pick its poison Tuesday night against Iowa City West.

The Trojans boast a daunting frontcourt of 6-foot-8 Iowa commit Patrick McCaffery and 6-foot-9 Even Brauns, so the Blue Devils, who have nobody above 6-foot-4, opted to focus their defense on those two.

That gave Iowa City West sophomore Marcus Morgan plenty of room to operate and he took advantage. He scored a career-high 19 points and threw down a two-handed dunk while being fouled to put an exclamation mark on the win.

It was a back-and-forth first quarter that ended with the Trojans holding an 18-12 lead after Morgan hit a 3-pointer to close out the period. The sophomore scored 13 of his 19 points in the opening quarter to help power West to its ninth consecutive state tournament appearance.

'He was unbelievable,' Iowa City West Coach Steve Bergman said. 'It's taken him a little bit of time but he's been pretty good the last month.'

The game got away from the Blue Devils (17-6) in the second quarter, as the Trojans outscored them 19-8 in the period. McCaffery scored 13 of his game-high 26 points in the quarter as Central's typically effective fullcourt pressure was ineffective. West shot a scorching 29-51 from the field compared to 18-43 for Central.

Substate 7

West Des Moines Dowling 44, Southeast Polk 40

Southeast Polk's (8-15) Cinderella run ended in the substate finals at the hands of Dowling (13-10).

Substate 8

No. 4 Waukee 45, Des Moines Hoover 38

The Warriors head to state with a 20-2 record. The Huskies' season ends at 14-10.

Class 3A

Substate 2

No. 3 Clear Lake 63, Charles City 53

The Lions (23-0) overcame a 26-22 halftime deficit for the first state berth since 1979. The Comets bowed out at 14-8.

Substate 7

No. 7 Norwalk 80, No. 8 Gilbert 60

The Warriors (20-4) pulled away from the Tigers (18-5) after leading 37-35 at halftime.

Class 2A

Substate 1

No. 8 Boyden-Hull 68, Pocahontas Area 56

Boyden-Hull is heading back to state for the first time since it won back-to-back championships in 2012 and 2013. Pocahontas Area finished 17-7.

Substate 7

Des Moines Christian 34, Treynor 33

The Lions (17-6) upended the Cardinals (20-4) with a 10-2 fourth-quarter run.

No. 3 Sioux Central 80, Exira-EHK 69

Sioux Central (22-2) is state bound for the first time ever with a win over Exira-EHK (22-3).
