Marjorie Maxine Johnston passed away Wednesday, June 3, 2015, at the Solon Nursing Care Center at age 93.
Marjorie was born Dec. 26, 1921, in Keokuk County, Iowa, the daughter of Otto Earl and Malinda Effie
(Norman) Lockridge. She graduated from Millers-burg High School in 1939, William Penn College, with a B.A. degree in education, and attended two years of graduate school at the University of Northern Iowa and the University of Iowa. On Dec. 20, 1941, Marjorie was united in marriage to Wade Dean Johnston in Kirksville, Mo. Together they farmed in the White Pigeon and Green Valley areas before moving to town in 1954. They spent 12 years wintering in Texas. She taught in a one-room school, Webster and South English, and was an elementary teacher for English Valley Community Schools for 35 years, retiring in 1984.
Marjorie was a member of the North English Christian Church, where she taught Sunday school, and served as a greeter and chairman on the church board. She was a past member of the CWF and the Rebekah Lodge.
She enjoyed her family, quilting, camping, birds and flowers. She was an avid reader and loved teaching children to read.
Marjorie is survived by her children, Margo Redlinger of Solon, Ronald Johnston of Atlanta, Ga., Francis (Joan) Johnston of Washington and Pamela Thodos of Washington; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; 14 stepgrandchildren; 10 stepgreat-grandchildren; and a sister, Naomi Morrison of North English.
She was preceded by her parents; husband, Wade; two sisters, Mae Westfall Jones and Ethal McArtor; half brother, Orville Lockridge; and two grandchildren, Michael Johnston and Philip Knebel.
Celebration of Life services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 8, at North English Christian Church. Pastor Luke Caster will officiate. Burial will be in North English Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home, North English.
A memorial fund has been established for the North English Christian Church or North English Library.
