Norma Maxine Blumer, 94, of Marion, passed away Saturday, Aug. 29, 2015, at her assisted living apartment in Marion. Graveside service: 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, at Sisley Grove Cemetery, located on Highway 30 West, Cedar Rapids. The family will then greet friends from 2 to 4 p.m. at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion.
She was born Norma Maxine Wood on July 4, 1921, the daughter of Norman Benjamin and Helen Flora (Burt) Wood. She was born at home on her grandfather's farm near Seneca, Iowa, and attended school at Seneca Consolidated and Ringsted, where she graduated from high school in 1939. She married Carl V. Jensen in 1940 and they had one daughter, Phyllis Diane. They later divorced and she married John Blumer on Oct. 8, 1951. John adopted Phyllis and four sons were born to this union, John Allen, William Arthur, Marc Henry and Douglas Leroy.
Maxine joined John on his family's farm and they farmed for 17 years. They then moved to Ames, Cedar Rapids, Salina, Kan., Beatrice, Neb., Jackson, Minn., and after some traveling they settled in Manchester. In 2012, the family farm received Century Farm Status, which remains in the family today.
After caring for her parents, John's parents and others, she continued to use her caring ways at Meth-Wick Manor in Cedar Rapids. She loved to watch birds, garden, keep up the family ancestry and appreciated beautiful flowers and trees.
Survivors include her children, Phyllis Miller, John Blumer, William (Amy) Blumer and Douglas (Julie) Blumer; grandchildren, Chris Miller, Robert (Rhonda) Miller, Jake Blumer and Samantha (Andy) Fangman; great-grandchildren, Dalton Miller, Jordan Miller, Isaac Blumer and Josephine Fangman; sister-in-law, Clara (Kenneth) Rowlet; six nieces; five nephews; and many more family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Norman Harley, William Allen and Andrew Ronald; sister, Roberta Jane; son, Marc Henry; and her husband, John, in 2007 and Carl Jensen.
