Ramadan began at midnight July 19
Jul. 20, 2012 10:23 am
Muslims around the world began celebrating Ramadan -- the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar -- at midnight July 19.
Fasting is from dawn to sunset and includes abstaining completely from food, drink and sex during those hours. Area muslims will break their daily fasts at sunset and conduct special Taraweh nightly prayers.
Aug. 18 is Eid ul-Fitr, the Feast of Breaking Fast. This is a time when Muslims gather for prayer and celebration.
