Oct. 20, 2009 4:04 pm
IOWA CITY - Former Iowa coach and athletics director Forest Evashevski is failing health and suffering from liver cancer, Iowa sports information director Phil Haddy said Tuesday.
Evashevski, 91, coached Iowa for nine seasons and led the Hawkeyes to Rose Bowl championships following the 1956 and 1958 seasons.
Iowa beat Oregon State 35-19 on Jan. 1, 1957 and beat California 38-12 on Jan. 1, 1959. It was the last time Iowa has won the Rose Bowl.
Four times Evashevski coached teams with one loss and finished 52-27-4 in his career. He led Iowa to an 8-1 record and a share of the Big Ten title in 1960.
Evashevski retired from coaching in 1960 and became the school's athletics director. He resides in Michigan.
