Homecoming activities

It's hard to believe Eastern Iowa schools are celebrating homecoming. Didn't the school year just begin?
One of the best things about homecoming, besides a football victory, are all the activities that surround this annual event. Parades. Class competitions. The dance.
Each high school celebrates homecoming in its own unique way, but it seems dress up days are just as popular now as they were when I was in high school. Still, I noticed a disturbing trend when looking through the stack of school district newsletters I receive every month.
The 1980s are a dress up day. When did that happen?
When I was in school, the '60s were our dress up decade. Maybe we had a few '70s thrown in there (hello polyester!), but NEVER the '80s! You had to be long past a decade in order to pay tribute to it.
I guess that day has come.
South Winneshiek school district included a few photos from its homecoming dress up events, including Sweating to the '80s work out clothing day. Who knew students had access to that many legwarmers? Still, it was the high school's Duct Tape Day I would have liked to see in person. Anyone who can craft an outfit from fabric-reinforced tape, and wear it on a hot fall day, is someone who embodies school spirit.
Happy Homecoming!
