NCAA tournament bid would bump McCaffery by $150,000
Nov. 20, 2014 5:29 pm
IOWA CITY - If the Iowa men's basketball team earns a second consecutive NCAA tournament appearance, Coach Fran McCaffery will add an $150,000 to his salary and extend his contract by two years.
McCaffery's amended contract, which was obtained by The Gazette via state open-records laws, has two scales depending on if he takes the Hawkeyes to the NCAA tournament. McCaffery will earn $2 million in guaranteed income for 2015-16 if the team qualifies for the NCAA tournament. If the Hawkeyes fail to qualify, McCaffery will earn $1.85 million, which was in his 2012 contract. An NCAA tournament bid would extend his deal through 2022 with $50,000 annual increases and top out at $2.3 million.
If McCaffery does not earn an NCAA tournament slot, his contract remains in place through 2020 unless the Hawkeyes qualify for a future NCAA tournament. If that's the case, McCaffery's annual compensation boosts by $150,000 for the following year.
McCaffery's on-court incentives remain in place. A Big Ten regular-season - shared or outright - or tournament title nets him $100,000. An NCAA tournament bid is worth $25,000, a Sweet Sixteen appearance is worth $50,000, as is an Elite Eight spot. If Iowa goes to the Final Four, McCaffery earns $100,000. A national title nets $150,000.
