Thomas Dunker Herberger of New York City died suddenly after a long illness on Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2017. He was 64 years old.
Tom attended Elgin Academy and was a graduate of George Washington Senior High School. He attended the University of California at Berkeley, University of Wisconsin at Madison and the University of Iowa.
In 1973, Tom became a member of Soka Gakkai International-USA (SGI-USA) and was a practicing member of Buddhism until his death.
Tom was intelligent, talented in art and music, as well as an avid collector of antiques and vintage comic books. He was a film historian who wrote for several film blogs. Tom's wit was infectious and he was beloved by his family, especially his sister, Ann.
Tom is survived by his sister, Ann Woods Herberger of New York City; three aunts, Darla Clark-Zigler, Georgann Clark-Cook and Susan McDonald, all of Cedar Rapids; nephews, Richard McDonald and David McDonald of Cedar Rapids; and dear friend, Dawn Cartellone of Colorado Springs, Colo.
Tom was preceded in death by his mother, Barbara Ann Herberger; his father, Thomas Walpole Dunker; his stepfather, Merle Herberger; an uncle, Ivan Matteson; and grandparents, Harry and Helen Dunker of Cedar Rapids.
Horne Dannecker Funeral Home will handle arrangements in New York City and interment will take place at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.
A private memorial will take place in late September at Cedar Memorial.
A memorial is being established in Tom's name to benefit Soka Gakkai International-USA.
