JERRY WAYNE CLARK
Mount Vernon
Jerry Wayne Clark, 85, of Broomfield, Colo., formerly of Mount Vernon, Iowa, died July 30, 2017. Jerry was born Feb. 27, 1932, near Lester, Iowa, to Clarence and Adeline Clark. He was married for 65 years to his high school sweetheart, Lois, who passed away in 2016.
Jerry played football for the University of Iowa, graduating in 1954. Following graduation, he coached at Fort Carson, Colo., before returning to the state of Iowa to coach high school football in both Grinnell and Mason City. Jerry served as head football coach at Cornell College (Mount Vernon, Iowa) for 28 years, and he was inducted into Cornell's Hall of Fame as their all-time winningest coach. After leaving Cornell in 1986, Jerry was on the coaching staff at Anderson University in Indiana for several years.
After retirement, Jerry and Lois moved to Colorado and established "Make Marriage Marvelous." For 20 years, they conducted workshops and provided Christian counseling. In later retirement years, he made thousands of miniature wooden cars for "Toys for God's Kids," and found joy in providing the cars for mission groups to distribute worldwide.
Surviving are three children, Mike (Julie) Clark of Thief River Falls, Minn., Mark (Denise) Clark of Marion, Iowa, and Nancy Clark of Broomfield, Colo.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Jerry was preceded in death by his wife, Lois; his parents; and brothers, Charles and Vic.
In 1975, Jerry and Lois attended a Fellowship of Christian Athletes camp for coaches, which made a lasting impact on their spiritual lives. In light of that transforming experience, gifts in memory of Jerry may be sent to Fellowship of Christian Athletes, 1800 46th St. NE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52402.
A Celebration of Life will be held in October at Mountain View Church, Westminster, Colo.
