Marble earns first-team B1G honors
Mar. 10, 2014 5:11 pm
IOWA CITY -- Devyn Marble arrived at Iowa four years ago as legacy, the son of Iowa's all-time leading scorer Roy Marble. But Devyn Marble has built his own legacy and earned one honor Monday his father never received.
Devyn Marble, a 6-foot-6 senior guard from Southfield, Mich., became the first Iowa player in seven years to earn first-team all-Big Ten honors, the league announced Monday afternoon. His father twice earned second-team all-Big Ten honors and once was a third-teamer.
Roy Marble's shadow always hovered near Devyn's career but it never defined him as a player.
"He's been his own man," Iowa assistant coach Kirk Speraw said. "It's never bothered him, and he's never shied away from what his father had done here at Iowa. He was going to be Devyn Marble and play the game the best way he could. He didn't worry about trying to meet someone else's expectations. He had high expectations for himself and it's been a credit to him and he's just played the game and taken what the defense has given him."
Joining Marble on the coaches and media's first team was Michigan's Nik Stauskas, Nebraska's Terran Petteway, Michigan State's Gary Harris and Wisconsin's Frank Kaminsky. Iowa forward Aaron White was named to the third team by both coaches and media.
Marble averaged 17.0 points a game this year -- sixth in the Big Ten -- and ranked fifth in steals (1.8) and 10th in assists with 3.5. In league play, Marble was second in scoring (18.3 points), was sixth in steals (1.6) and tied for ninth in assists (3.5).
Marble provides defensive challenges for opponents with both his size and skill set. He worked into a solid 3-point threat, averaging 1.8 a game in league play (ranking seventh) and hit 40.7 percent of them (11th).
"He can hit that intermediate shot. He can hit a stepback. He can post a smaller guard. He's so versatile," Purdue Coach Matt Painter said. "I wouldn't say he's the level of (former national player of the year) Evan Turner, but he's probably the closet thing to compare since Evan Turner was in our league."
Marble scored double figures in every league game until Saturday against Illinois, when he scored eight points. He often rotates to point guard and directs the offense. He also defends the opponents' best player, whether that's Stauskas or Harris.
"I shook his hand in the line and told him how much I admired caoching against him, preparing for him, watching him play on film," Illinois Coach John Groce said. "I think he's one of the elite players in our league, and I think that because he plays both ends, you can't guard him with just one game."
The last Iowa player to earn all-Big Ten honors was Adam Haluska in 2007. Marble ranks sixth in Iowa history with 1,662, just 13 points shy of tying for fifth with Ronnie Lester.
"He's always been unselfish, he's always had a good assist-to-turnover ratio," Speraw said. "We had to move him around to different places that we've needed him. It all started when we had a big … when we needed him at backup point guard his first year. He's been in that role, we've played him at the two, we've played him at the three and whatever's been best for our team, he stepped into that role and that's not always easy to do. He's handled it with easy.
