The switch away from coal to natural gas is under way in Iowa, compliments of rock-bottom natural gas prices and feared regulatory changes.
Alliant Energy recently stopped using coal to fuel two older generating units in Dubuque and plans to discontinue coal use at two other units at its Sutherland Generating Station in Marshalltown.
Closing, upgrading or switching fuels at coal plants are part of a plan developed by Alliant after it scrubbed plans to build a new coal-burning plant in Marshalltown more than a year ago.
