Joyce K Harney, 70, of Iowa City, passed away Sunday, Jan. 25, 2015, at home surrounded by her family. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, at St. Mary's Church, Iowa City, with Father John Spiegel officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City, with a vigil service at 7:30 p.m. A rosary will be conducted by the Catholic Daughters of Americas. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery, Iowa City.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the University of Iowa Foundation/Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Regina Foundation or St. Mary's Church.
Joyce was born Oct. 19, 1944, in Iowa City, the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Waldschmidt) O'Neil. She was united in marriage to Edmund Harney on May 7, 1963, at St. Mary's Church. Joyce was a member of Catholic Daughters of America. Her greatest joy came from spending time with her family, especially cooking for them on the holidays.
Joyce is survived by her loving husband, Edmund; five children, Tracy (Jeff) McNutt of Iowa City, Kathy Harney of Scottsdale, Ariz., Gary (Jennifer) Harney of Iowa City, Suzanne (Bruce) Wright of Iowa City and Jane (Carter) Ralphe of Middleton, Wis.; 16 grandchildren, Adam (Desiree) Harney, Quinn, Isaac and Emma McNutt, Leah, Tessa and Joseph Harney, Henry, Nolan, Luke, Derek and Grant Wright, and Ryan, Riley, Gabrielle and Sarah Ralphe; four great-grandchildren, Alex, Giana, Channing and Mackenzie Harney; seven brothers and sisters, Joan (Joe) Kaipo of Tulsa, Okla., Jean (Pat) Harney of Iowa City, Ron (Jackie) O'Neil of Solon, Coleen (John) Reynolds of Peoria, Ariz., Terry (Glenda) O'Neil of West Branch, Denny (Monica) O'Neil of Iowa City and Marlene (Steve) Otte of North English; one brother-in-law, John Stiles of Lewiston, Minn.; and extended family.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; step-mother, Gertrude O'Neil; and one sister, Roberta Stiles.
