Kurtz, Eugene J.
Eugene J. Kurtz, 68, of 411 S. Washington, Lisbon, died Saturday, May 21, 2011, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha after a short illness. Funeral Mass: 11 a.m. June 4, 2011, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Mount Vernon. Inurnment with military rites at the Lisbon Cemetery. Iowa cremation is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia; one daughter, Denise (Daniel) Zahradnik of Mount Vernon; and three brothers, Edward of Rochester, Minn., Harold of Iowa City, and Philip of Brighton.
He is also survived by two grandchildren, Gabrielle and Blake; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by a son, Patrick Joseph; and two sisters, Sharlene and Darlene.
Gene was born on June 20, 1942, in Pleasant Plain, Iowa, the son of Francis and Aleda Sieren Kurtz. He married Virginia A. Taylor on July 29, 1967, in Pleasant Plain. Gene worked at Alliant Energy and retired from there in 2005, after more than 37 years of service. Gene was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and proudly served in the Navy during the Vietnam War. He also retired from the Army Reserves after 20 years of service.
Gene enjoyed fishing, gardening, golf, his antique tractors and the time he spent with his beloved family, especially his grandchildren.
A memorial fund has been established in Gene' name.
