La Porte City
Eleanor J. Appleton, 90, of La Porte City, died Saturday, Feb. 11, 2017, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo.
She was born July 19, 1926, in La Porte City, the daughter of Samuel and Mary (Martin) Fleisher. Eleanor was a graduate
of La Porte City High School. She was united in marriage with Martin G. Appleton on July 28, 1947, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. He preceded her in death in 1975.
Eleanor worked as a cook at the La Porte City Nursing Home for many years until her retirement. She was a charter member of the American Lutheran Church in La Porte City, a member of the La Porte City VFW Auxiliary and volunteered at the La Porte City Community Center. Eleanor was an excellent cook, and she enjoyed dancing and playing cards.
Survivors include three sons, Jerry (Jan) Appleton of Fairfax, Marty (Jan) Appleton of Marion and Scott (Lisa) Appleton of La Porte City; two daughters, Penny (Butch) Dodd of La Porte City and Deb (Tom) Heffernen of Jesup; a daughter-in-law, Deb Weber of Dunkerton; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sons, Kent and Allen; and her brothers and sisters.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 17, at American Lutheran Church, 801 Monroe St., La Porte City, with private family inurnment at West View Cemetery. The family will greet friends after 10 a.m. Friday at the church. La Porte City Funeral Home is assisting the family.
