Jean M. Thompson Hoag passed away Friday, Jan. 20, 2017, in Coralville after a short battle with cancer. Per her wishes, cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life service was held Jan. 21 at her granddaughter's home.
Jean is survived by five children, Steve Howe, Cindy Kintzel, Kevin Howe, Leslie Thompson and Becky Clark; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; brother, Richard; and sister, Karen.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands and sisters.
Jean was born Nov. 11, 1933, to Ross and Opal (Whiting) Abernathy in Vinton, Iowa. She attended schools in Vinton. She graduated from Estelle Compton Modeling School in Minneapolis and modeled for several years there. She graduated from cosmetology school in Maine and operated her own beauty shop for 10 years there. Jean was a past state department commander for DAV Auxiliary, as well as state department advisor for four years and unit commander in the State of Maine. She also was a tireless and active church worker; holding many positions there. Jean traveled extensively in the United States and was a giver and always eager and thirsty for the next step in life. She was devoted to her children and family. She loved and trusted people and reached out to those in need. She leaves many, many friends in many places.
