IOWA CITY – The case for a rare sixth season of eligibility for University of Iowa women's basketball player JoAnn Hamlin didn't make it to the NCAA.
“(The university) didn't think there was a workable case, considering everything compliance had seen,” said Jan Jensen, associate head coach. “It's definitely a bummer, but we knew it was going to be a rough row to hoe. It was definitely a long shot.”
Hamlin missed the entire season after being diagnosed with a severe blood clot in her leg shortly before the season began.
She spent her freshman year at Kansas State, then sat out the 2006-07 year per NCAA transfer rules. That year off doesn't qualify as hardship. Hamlin said in February that the transfer was necessary to continue her basketball career, but would not specify why.
Jensen said Hamlin's options include a professional basketball career, pursuit of other employment and returning to school to pursue a master's degree.
