Gertrude C. Miller,
102, passed peacefully Wednesday, July 22, 2015, at her home. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 25, at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be after noon Saturday at the church, where a rosary will be recited at 12:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice.
Gertrude was born Dec. 14, 1912, in Iowa City. She was a 1931 graduate of Hazleton High School. On Sept. 10, 1960, Gertrude married Leo Miller at St. Mary's Church.
Gertrude was the last surviving child of Joseph D. and Charlotte Miller Rummelhart. During World War II, Gertrude helped raise funds for the war as a USO volunteer. As a child, she played tuba in the Rummelhart family's Little German Band, and later she was a part of the Roaring Rummies Band with her siblings. Gertrude did housework for a long time and ironing on the side. She had also been employed by UI Housekeeping, where she cleaned residence halls.
Gertrude was passionate about giving to others who were less fortunate. Leo and she would make annual road trips to Kentucky where they would distribute clothing. They traveled throughout the United States and loved to camp and fish. Gertrude enjoyed time spent with her siblings and their families, especially playing cards and working jigsaw puzzles.
Special thanks to the many friends who have visited Gertrude, providing her with much happiness, especially Jill, Kate, Deb, Delores, Terri, Rosemary, Eileen, Mark and Rosemary and for the wonderful care she received at Lantern Park Care Center, Home Choice Senior Care and Griswold Home Care.
Gertrude is survived by her sister-in-law, Frieda (John) Rummelhart of Iowa City; and numerous nephews, nieces and great-nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by her husband and seven siblings, Leo, Tillie Shrader, John, George, Edith Brysch, Loretta Kantor and Kathryn Keeley.
