Fobes, Irma Lucille
Irma Lucille Fobes, 94, of Waverly, died Saturday, Dec. 18, 2010, at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly.
Irma was born on April 26, 1916, east of Earlville, Iowa, the daughter of Cornelius D. and May Jane (Morris) Hunt. She attended the Earlville Consolidated Schools, graduating from high school in 1933. She then attended Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls for two years, where she received her teaching certificate in secondary education. She then taught in Greeley, McGregor and Edgewood, Iowa (fifth grade). On Dec. 31, 1940, she was united in marriage to A. Glen Fobes in Manchester, Iowa. Upon Glen's discharge from the army in 1946, the couple made their home in Edgewood.
While in Edgewood, Irma was active in the Methodist Church where she participated with the U.M.W. and taught Sunday school. She also served as Worthy Matron of Avalon Chapter of Eastern Star and belonged to the Edgewood Women's Club. In December 1988, she and Glen moved to Waverly to be closer to their daughter's family. While in Waverly, she became a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Matin Circle of the church, a member of the Literature Club and enjoyed her involvement with the Walk and Talk Club. Her interest included her family, church, needle work, reading and playing bridge.
Irma's memory is honored by her husband, A. Glen Fobes of Waverly; a son, Steven (Penny) Fobes of Hilton Head, S.C.; a daughter, Jean (Jerry) Rochford of New Hampton; three grandchildren, Jerry J. Rochford of Guttenberg, James Rochford of Edgewood, and Joel (Andrea) Rochford of New Hampton; and seven great-grandchildren, Payton, Preston, Parker, Pyrce, Conner, Carlee and Caden Rochford.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Dale, Kenneth and Clarence Hunt; and two sisters, Hazel Hunt and Viola Wilkinson.
Irma has been cremated and memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 21, at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Waverly, with Pastor Deborah Wise officiating. There will be a private family burial of cremains on Tuesday.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to either the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community or Trinity United Methodist Church and online condolences may be left at
