Lawmakers must protect Mueller investigation

As someone who actually has to live in the world they are creating, I wonder what U.S. Rep. Rod Blum and Sens. Joni Ernst and Chuck Grassley are so scared of. The President is under investigation, and has now fired the U.S. Attorney General. Are we now so far behind democratically that the rule of law has been abandoned?
Robert Mueller is doing his job as an independent investigator to confirm electoral integrity, the process of which is fundamental to our right to a fair election. To fail to protect this right would just add to the long list of rights lawmakers have failed to protect.
The situation calls into question our entire governmental system, if we do not protect the right of the people to challenge and check presidential power. Do lawmakers deserve re-election if they fail to protect Mueller? To me, and to the people who believe politicians are equal to the rest of us, they do not.
