Merfeld, Donald J.
CEDAR RAPIDS - Donald J. Merfeld, 81, of Heritage Nursing and Rehab, passed away there peacefully on Thursday, Sept. 23, 2010. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Monday at All Saints Catholic Church. The Rev. David O'Connor will officiate. Inurnment: Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, where there will be a rosary and vigil service at 4 p.m. Friends may also call at the church after 9:30 a.m. Monday.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Fern; three daughters, Diane (Adam) Condrick of Darnestown, Md., Pamela Merfeld of Gaithersburg, Md., and Amy (Ronald Cook) Merfeld of Winneconne, Wis.; a son, Richard (Dagmar) of Dubuque; a brother, Mike of Cedar Rapids; and a sister, Ann Mattson of Newport News, Va. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Erick, Elijah and Ehren; and his extended family at Heritage Nursing and Rehab.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Don was born Jan. 6, 1929, in Cascade, the son of Michael and Bertha Bries Merfeld. He married Fern VerCande on June 13, 1959, in Victor. Don worked at FMC in data processing and retired from there after many years of service.
He was a member of All Saints Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus, Council 5677. Don enjoyed fishing, baseball, playing bingo, going to the casino and especially the time he spent with his many friends and beloved family.
Memorial donations may be given to the All Saints Social Hall Kitchen in Don's name.
