Gerry Rohr, 70, died Saturday, Aug. 23, 2014, at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids, following a sudden illness. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27, at the First Presbyterian Church, Monticello, with interment in the Oakwood Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26, at Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello. The Rev. Al Polito will officiate.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Donna; two children, Wendi Fortman, Monticello, and Brian (Kristin) Rohr, Iowa City; seven grandchildren, Whitney (Scotty) Hall, Michaela Fortman and fiance Jason Williams and Maci Fortman, all of Monticello; and Michael Rohr, Tanner Miller, Emily Bennett and Jacob Rohr, all of Iowa City; and his brothers and sisters-in-law, Dianne (Jerry) Haag, William (Ann) Buckner, all of Monticello, Richard (Janet) Buckner, Hopkinton and Debra (David) Claus, Sacramento, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gerald Sr. and Tresa; his mother and father-in-law, Donald and Earlene Buckner; and a brother-in-law, Robert Buckner.
Gerald Jacob Rohr Jr. was born March 28, 1944,
at John McDonald Hospital, Monticello, Iowa. He was the son of Gerald and Tresa Willard Rohr Sr. Gerry was a member of the Monticello Community Schools class of 1962. He married his high school sweetheart, Donna Buckner on Oct. 6, 1963, at the First Presbyterian Church,
Monticello.
Gerry had been employed by People Natural Gas and Cuckler Buildings. In 1984, he went to work at the Iowa Men's Reformatory in Anamosa, where he operated the power plant. In his spare time, he managed the Fitzgerald Apartments for over 20 years. He retired from the power plant in 2002.
In his retirement career, Gerry worked for Welter Storage and Rem Electric and drove trucks for many different people. The perfect job arrived when he started working at Camp Courageous and became the train engineer. He had just recently completed the new track layout at the camp.
Gerry served on the Monticello Fire Department for 34 years, from 1964 until 2000. When he was not working, he was always helping someone fix something.
Gerry was a loving husband, dad and grandpa and a friend to many. He will be forever missed and always in our hearts.
