Strittmatter, Ambrose 'Andy' N.
Ambrose “Andy” N. Strittmatter, 91, of Monticello, died Saturday evening, Nov. 6, 2010, at Shady Rest Care Center in Cascade. Friends may call from 2 to 7:30 p.m. today at Kramer Funeral Home in Monticello, where a parish Scripture service will be held at 2 p.m.A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Monticello, with burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Officiating will be the Rev. Keith Birch.
Andy was born Sept. 6, 1919, in Casey, Iowa, the son of Leonard N. and Barbara (Ludwig) Strittmatter. Later, in Des Moines, he attended All Saints School. During high school he was a golf caddie and worked at a drugstore. After completing the Civilian Pilot Training course in 1937, he received his pilot's license.Andy graduated from Dowling Junior College and earned his law degree from Drake University in 1942.Andy was an FBI agent for 10 years, serving in Augusta, Savannah, Buffalo, Detroit, Omaha, Des Moines and Cedar Rapids.On May 19, 1947, he married Lillian Locher at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Monticello.He practiced law in Monticello for 52 years, retiring at age 85. He was the Monticello City Attorney for 20 years.
Andy was a member of Rotary Club and enjoyed playing bridge, golf and discussing political and economic issues. He and Lillian passed on their love of travel to their children and grandchildren.
Surviving are his two daughters, Susan (Eric) Sandeen of Laramie, Wyo., and Ellen Strittmatter of Monticello; a son, Nick (Anne) Strittmatter of Monticello; and four grandchildren, Alexander of Kabul, Afghanistan, David of Boca Raton, Fla., Lucas of Bose, China and Katherine of Rome, Italy.
He was preceded in death by wife, Lillian; brother, Bernard; and two sisters, Evangeline Stein and Marcie Engel.
Memorials may be made to the Monticello Food Pantry, Camp Courageous of Iowa, and/or Hospice of Dubuque.
