Haag, Virgil P.
Virgil P. Haag, 84, of Monticello, died peacefully Saturday, March 3, 2012, surrounded by his family, at the Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following an extended illness. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 6, at the First Presbyterian Church, Monticello, with Father Keith Birch officiating. Interment in the Oakwood Cemetery with military honors. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello.

He is survived by his wife, Lorraine; three children, Linda (John) Pashek, Tomahawk, Wis., Kathy (Tim) Kuempel, Guttenberg, and Jeff (Pam) Haag, Cedar Rapid; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Gregory (Claretta) Haag, New Orleans, La.; a sister-in-law, Kathryn Haag, Monticello; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Victor, Vincent and Roman; and a sister, Lucille Loomis.
Virgil Peter Haag was born Oct. 19, 1927, in Parkston, S.D. He was the son of Gregor and Dora Fritza Haag. He graduated from the Sacred Heart Catholic School, Monticello, in June 1945. Virgil enlisted in the United States Army in September 1946 and served in the 21st Infantry Regiment in Kyushu, Japan. He was discharged in January 1948. Virgil started farming and later worked at Monticello Auto Wreckers.
Virgil married Lorraine Buol on June 26, 1953, at Monticello, Iowa. Virgil was employed as a heavy equipment operator most of his working career. He was employed by Iben Excavation and Grading, Connelly Construction and B&J Excavation. He retired in June 2004. Virgil was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the VFW.
The foundation of Virgil's life was his family and his work. He will be remembered fondly by those that knew him and forever missed by those that loved him.
