Clifford O. Wears, 95, of Venice, Fla., formerly of Monticello, died Wednes-day, Jan. 20, 2016, at his home.
Visitation will be from
2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 24, at Kramer Funeral Home in Monticello, with a parish vigil service at 2 p.m. Visitation will continue from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will commence at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Father Paul Baldwin will officiate.
Clifford was born Oct. 16, 1920, in Solon, Iowa, the son of Everett and Mary (Mattas) Wears. He married Gladys E. Barta on Jan. 10, 1942, in Kirksville, Mo. Cliff owned and operated Wears Hatchery. Together they farmed near Solon, Cascade and Monticello for many years. They purchased an International Harvester business in Monticello in 1962, which they operated until retirement in 1991.
His passion was flying since his early 20s. That passion led to the development and management of the Monticello Airport and Monticello Aviation.
He inspired many to achieve their goals, had high work ethics and mentored others.
Survivors include his children, Carolann Fairchild of Ankeny, Ramunda Wears of Venice, Fla., and William Wears of Marshalltown; 12 grandchildren; 15 great- grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and special family friends, the Menechino family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Gladys, in 2001; a daughter, Paula (Larry) Rickels, in 2014; and two brothers, Dale and Paul Wears
