Harriett Jean Gilliland, 88, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, Dec. 8, 2016, as a result of several health issues. Visitation will be held at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 15. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 16, at New Covenant Bible Church, with visitation one hour prior to the service.
Harriett was born July 17, 1928, in Omaha, Neb. She graduated from Omaha University and worked at United Airlines prior to marrying Warren Gilliland on July 25, 1953, and moving to Cedar Rapids.
Her survivors include her sons, Richard (Susan), John and Jeffrey Gilliland. She had three grandsons, James (Christina) of Illinois, Stephen (Michelle) of Arizona, and David Gilliland of Iowa; plus three great-grandchildren, Abigail, Kaylee and Mattias Gilliland of Illinois.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Duncan and Lorene McLellan; brother, Richard McLellan; husband, Warren Gilliland; and son, Timothy Gilliland.
Harriett was a sweet, caring soul with strong ideals and a twinkle in her eye. She deeply loved Jesus Christ, her family, friends and church. Over the years, she attended worship services and Bible studies faithfully, and regularly helped fold bulletins. She also encouraged and served many people by calling, writing letters or cards, and bringing meals. Her kindness, dedication and humility had a great impact on those around her.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be directed to New Covenant Bible Church.
