Norbert G. Manternach Jr., 83, of Monticello, died Monday, June 1, 2015, at Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 4, at Kramer Funeral Home in Monticello with a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 3 p.m. Friends may continue to call after 10 a.m. Friday at Kramer Funeral Home.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday, June 5, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with burial in the church cemetery. The Rev. Paul Baldwin will officiate.
Norbert was born Feb. 27, 1932, in Monticello, the son of Norbert Sr. and Katherine (Muller) Manternach. He attended Sacred Heart School and graduated in 1949 as valedictorian of his class. Norbert enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving for three years. He married Donna Bertling at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Worthington, Iowa, April 27, 1955. Together they farmed west of Monticello. He loved to go to his children and grandchildren's sporting events.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 60 years, Donna; children, Roman Manternach and Sue (John) Russ, both of Monticello, Phyllis (Teddy) Barr of Perry, Iowa, Andy (Leanna) Manternach and Marvin Manternach, both of Monticello, Jean (Dave) Webber of Cascade, Donna (Keith) Young of West Branch, Iowa, and Wayne (Carrie) Manternach of Monticello; 14 grandchildren, Jane, Jeff, Johnny, Andrew, Brandon, Chad, Derrick, Elaina, Brittni, Brandi, Chance, Taylor, Ryan and Hayley; six great-grandchildren, Cassidy, Mikey, Roslynne, Memphis, Jacob and Evan; siblings, Dave (Elaine) Manternach of Monticello, Sister Phyllis Manternach OSF of Dubuque, Dan (Joan) Manternach of Monticello and Jerry (Carolyn) Manternach of Anamosa; brother-in-law, Roman "Buck" (Margaret) Bertling of Worthington; sisters-in-law, Betty Ockenfels of Iowa City and Mary Alice Bertling of Dyersville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Martha Manternach; infant sister, Rita; sister and brothers-in-law, Christina (Don) Bertling, Richard Ockenfels and Charles Bertling; and grandson, Joseph Russ.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
