Bench scores 41; Marion cruises in opener

MARION -- Don't call them reserves. Call them contributors.

Marion's non-starters posted 41 points as the Indians whacked Dyersville Beckman, 64-38, in a Wamac Conference interdivisional girls' basketball game Tuesday night at Marion High School.

"We've been hoping to get a deep rotation," Indians Coach Brian O'Donnell said. "We feel we have a lot of kids that can contribute."

Eleven players scored, and the Indians (1-0) stormed to a 40-11 halftime lead before coasting home.

Sophomore Emi Banes scored 16 points in her varsity debut, and a pair of freshmen were impressive. Amanda Sahm added 12 points (making 5 of 7 shots from the floor) while Michalyn Mohr led the team in rebounds, with six.

All of them did so in a reserve role. A contributor role.

"I was really nervous before the game," Banes said. "I've been looking forward to it all week. I was really excited and I knew what I needed to do."

Marion was 6-16 last season, but all indications Tuesday were of forward progress, particularly in the first half.

The Indians held Beckman (0-2) without a field goal for the first 9:19 and led 21-3 after one quarter, 40-11 at halftime. The Blazers coughed up 32 turnovers, 19 in the first half.

"The first half, we really moved the ball around and ran the floor well," O'Donnell said.

"We feel we can be a competitive team if our defense improves."

Dani Peyton added eight points for the winners. Becca Deutmeyer paced Beckman with 12 points, all in the second half.

Marion is at Solon next Tuesday; Beckman hosts Class 3A No. 1 Williamsburg.
