Carol Jean Lake, 86, died peacefully on Thursday,
April 23, 2020.
A private service will be held Wednesday, April 29, 2020, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church with the Rev. Brent Hartwig officiating. At 10:45 a.m. following the service, family and friends may process to Memory Gardens Cemetery. From 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, friends may pay their respects to Carol Jean by passing under the front canopy at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service. Due to COVID-19 regulations attendees must remain in their cars at the graveside committal.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church or to Bickford Cottage.
Carol Jean was born April 6, 1934, in Lowden, Iowa, the daughter of Hugo and Alice Kroemer Meyer. She was a graduate of Lowden High School and attended the University of Iowa. On Dec. 5, 1953, Carol Jean married Bobbie Joe Lake at St. Paul's Lutheran Chapel in Iowa City.
Carol Jean was a unit clerk at Mercy Hospital for many years.
Carol Jean and her family were charter members of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. She enjoyed bowling at Plamor Lanes, where she coached youth bowling. Carol Jean liked to garden, bake, cook, play cards and travel to visit family and beyond. She was a St. Louis Cardinal and Iowa Hawkeyes fan. Most important to her was time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to the caregivers at Bickford Cottage.
Survivors include her five children, Pamela (Al) Baethke of St. Louis, Mo., William (Sherry) Lake of Iowa City, Patty (David) Kaefring of Oxford, Brian Lake of Iowa City and Bradley (Kathy) Lake of Fitchburg, Wis.; 18 grandchildren, Nathan Baethke, Lindsay (Mark) Kottmann, Jason (Kylie) Baethke, Brandon (Jayme) Baethke, Kelly (Chris) Carlson, Kristene Lake, Michelle (Jason) Greve, Bobbie J. Lake Jr, James (Jordan) Ellyson, Justin (Carrie) Ellyson, Crystal (Ben) Minniear, Andrew (Jana) Lake, Danny (Trish) Lake, Kevin (Christina) Lake, David Lake, Brita Lake, Brady Lake and Cooper Lake; 23 great-grandchildren, Ava Baethke, Hudson, Wyatt and Tucker Kottmann, Mila and Ryker Baethke, Brantley and Uriah Baethke, Dylan, Max, and Jacob Carlson, Witten and Keaton Greve, James, Jarrett, and Jackson Ellyson, and Tyler Ellyson, Maddie, Jack and Ellie Lake, Layla Lake, and Calvin and Naomi Lake; and brothers-in-law, Donald Lake and Billy Duzan.
Carol Jean was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 2014; and five siblings, Phyllis, Dorothy, Arlene, Janice and Robert.
