Iowa had a lot of recruits visit for the night game last weekend. Let's check and see how that worked, from friend of the On Iowa, HawkeyeReport.com's Tom Kakert.
The atmosphere in Kinnick Stadium this past weekend couldn't have been better for the Iowa coaches. They made their sales pitch to six official visitors and several unofficial visitors who saw the Hawkeyes' win over Northwestern.
One of the interesting aspects of the growth of social media is fans can read immediate feedback from prospects on campus.
For example, defensive back Anthony Morgan, of Plano, Texas, provided feedback on Twitter when he sent out a message saying Iowa was amazing. His comment was re-tweeted by four-star Des Moines Dowling wide receiver Amara Darboh, who also was on his official visit last weekend.
In a perfect world, the Hawkeyes would've landed verbal commitments from the prospects before they left Iowa City. While none of the six visitors committed, the black-and-gold striping, the patriotic card stunt and the win over the Wildcats left a strong impression on all of the visitors.
Morgan, a three-star prospect, put the Hawkeyes on the top of his list of schools.
"I loved it," said Morgan. "It was amazing. I didn't expect the fans to be that loud and crazy, so that was kind of shocking for me to be honest. I was really impressed and had a lot of fun."
He was being heavily recruited by Arizona, but with the coaching change in Tucson, UA is fading. Morgan plans to make a decision before Christmas and has no other visits scheduled.
Darboh, who is the highest ranked prospect in the state of Iowa, told his high school coach Tom Wilson that he saw another side of the Hawkeye program on his trip.
"He said it was a great visit," Wilson said. "He got to spend a lot of time with coach [Kirk] Ferentz and [wide receivers] coach [Erik] Campbell, which he enjoyed and found to be very informative."
Darboh has an official visit scheduled to Michigan on Nov. 26 and also plans to visit Notre Dame and perhaps Florida before his decision.
Four-star linebacker Quanzell Lambert, from Sicklerville, N.J., enjoyed his visit. He also saw his high school teammate and current Iowa freshman Quinton Alston play a good portion of the second half at middle linebacker.
"It was good," Lambert said. "It was my first time out there and I got to talk to a lot of the players and all of the coaches and just get a good feel for everything. They definitely impressed me."
Florida wide receiver Greg Mabin officially received his scholarship offer from Iowa on his visit this weekend and came away impressed with Iowa fans.
"The game was crazy," Mabin said. "The fans were just going insane. I loved the sea of black and yellow in the stands. That was really cool."
After returning home, Mabin said the Hawkeyes are on the top of his list, but he plans to wait and make his college choice after his senior season. He currently holds offers from Tulane and Jacksonville State and is receiving interest from Vanderbilt, Wisconsin, and Middle Tennessee State.
Defensive end prospect Trace Clark also sang the praises of the Iowa fans and the Hawkeye program after his visit.
“I really enjoyed the trip,” Clark said. “I liked the atmosphere at the game, the fans were really into it, and that was something that I really enjoyed being there. I liked the people, both players and coaches, because they all seem like good people. It was a good trip.”
Clark has visited Purdue and will head to Stanford this weekend. He plans to wait until the end of his senior season before deciding and hasn't ruled out more official visits.
RB Greg Garmon, the final official visitor, raved about his trip, but he'll continue to take visits before deciding in early January.
Time will tell on if the big recruiting weekend pays dividends with this star-studded group. But, the Hawkeyes certainly put their best foot forward on all fronts and have themselves in good position when the prospects make their final decision in the coming months.
