Police said a man was intoxicated when he led officers on a chase that topped 60 mph overnight in northwest Cedar Rapids.
Michael E. Long, 54, of 3137 Stoney Point Rd. SW, was arrested on suspicion of driving with a suspended license, operating while intoxicated, attempting to elude and several traffic offenses. No one was injured in the chase, which ended when Long stopped in a parking lot along Jacolyn Drive NW.
According to police, an officer stopped Long around 11:40 p.m. Tuesday in the 400 block of E Avenue NW because a brake light was not working. Long initially told the officer he had forgotten his wallet at home and could not find his insurance. As the officer returned to his squad car to check the name Long had given, he sped away.
Long made a couple turns and was clocked going 65 mph in a 40 mph zone in the 2500 block of F Avenue NW, police said. He turned north onto Edgewood Road NW and then cut into a residential area, only to return to Edgewood Road and head west on F Avenue again. He took Wiley Boulevard NW south and turned on Jupiter Drive NW into another neighborhood, police said.
When Long stopped the car in the parking lot of an apartment complex, officers boxed in the vehicle. He refused to get out of the car, so officers forced him to do so, according to the police report. Long was transported to the Linn County Jail.
