CEDAR RAPIDS - This time a year ago, there was a bit of uncertainty surrounding the annual Alliant Energy Fifth Season 8K.
But after another successful run that uncertainty is nowhere to be seen as the Cedar Valley Running Association gears up for the 27th running of its marquee event.
The Fifth Season 8K is the longest running race of that distance in the United States. Starting in 1986, the race has been a staple among Fourth of July traditions for thousands of participants and spectators. It has awarded more prize money than any other 8K in the country, which helps attract a diverse and competitive field.
“This race has such a rich history,” said Colin Flynn, in his second year as race director. “Last year was a big change for the race, but in hindsight things went very well. We had an overwhelmingly positive response.”
The big change last summer was a new course, leaving behind the traditional run up Third Avenue and down Second Avenue. The course now starts at the Chrome Horse Saloon, 1202 Third St. SE, and follows the Cedar River to the Prairie Park Fishery.
With runners now accustomed to the route, the focus is providing more entertainment.
“We're hoping to make things even more fun and exciting,” Flynn said. “There will be much more entertainment available, and we even have cheerleaders from area schools lined up to cheer on our runners.”
As July 4 approaches, Flynn is looking forward to putting on another successful event.
“At this point, it's all about putting out those small fires - or little problems that come up,” he said. “You can't plan for everything, but we've got this down to a science.”
The Alliant Energy 8K is just one of the Fifth Season Races. There is a 5K and children's run July 4. The Bohemian Triangle Street Mile at 7 p.m. July 3 is new this year.
