Moore Sr., Patrick L.
Patrick L. Moore Sr., 82, longtime Iowa City contractor, died Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009, at the Mercy Hospice. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City, with the Rev. Ed Fitzpatrick officiating. Burial, with military honors, will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery. Friends may call Tuesday from
4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home, where a vigil service will be held at 7:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice or the Pat L. Moore Memorial Fund, c/o Hills Bank and Trust.
Patrick was born March 21, 1927, in Iowa City, the son of Leo Thomas and Mildred Bragg Moore. On July 17, 1947, he married Marie “Cork” Montgomery. Marie died April 20, 1992. Patrick married Susan Gourley on March 27, 1993, in Cedar Rapids. He served in the U.S. Army.
In 1963, Pat began CPR Construction Co., which later became Pat Moore Construction Co. He was instrumental in housing developments in Towncrest and Village Green. Pat retired in 1992. Following retirement, Pat volunteered with home builds with Habitat for Humanity.
Pat was a member of St. Patrick's Church, Iowa City Noon Rotary, County Johnson Irish, the Iowa City Elks, Moose and Eagles Lodge. He liked to bowl and golf. Pat enjoyed the summers spent camping near the Coralville Lake and Guttenberg and the winters Cork and he spent in Texas. He and Sue traveled and spent winters in Tucson. Pat loved the time spent with family, especially his grandchildren.
Pat is survived by his wife, Susan of Iowa City; seven children and 17 grandchildren, Cathy Ahrendt of Iowa City and her son, Carl; Pat (Cathie) Moore Jr. of Iowa City and their children, Connie (Mark) Haneline, Jake (Heather) Moore and Cindy (Jay) Peiffer; the late Ben (Patricia) Moore of Iowa City and their sons, Tom (Susan) Moore and Chad (Michelle) Moore; Mike (Katy) Moore of New Hope, Minn., and their sons, Michael (Sara) Moore and Ryan (Sara) Moore; Joe (Laurie) Moore of Iowa City and their children, Nick and Abbie; Bob (Sue) Moore of North Liberty and their children, Megan (Trevor) Johnson, Brady and Emily Moore; Mary (Martin) Gaffey of Iowa City and their children, Robert (Jeni) Gaffey, Heather, Joe and Hillary Gaffey; stepdaughter, Heather (Matt) Gerard of Coralville and sons, Matthew, Jacob and Benjamin; 11 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Leila Heaton of Coralville, Etta Brown of Illinois and Alice Barkalow of Iowa City; brothers and sisters-in-law, Dorothy Montgomery Miller, Jim (Kathy) Gerber, Gail Gerber, Mary (Larry) Newport and Tim (Barb) Gerber; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pat was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Marie “Cork”; two sons, Ben and infant son Thomas; his sister, Illene Holbrook; and brothers and sister-in-law, Mary Ann Herdliska, James Montgomery and Doug Gerber.
