Larry was born April 19, 1942, in Iowa Falls, Iowa, the son of Bernard Lloyd and Maude Ella LaMar Johnson. He was a graduate of Simpson College, Indianola. Larry married Carolyn Dills on Sept. 11, 1965, in Western Springs, Ill. They later divorced. He married Judith A. (Hoefer) Dalton on Jan. 1, 1995, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Larry's 50-year professional banking career took him to several communities in Iowa and Illinois. He retired from Farmers State Bank in January 2012. He was a member of the Iowa Army National Guard for 38 years, retiring in June 2004 with a rank of CW5. He was former treasurer and board member of the Marion Chamber of Commerce, past president of Cedar Rapids Rotary West, former president and board member of HACAP, former board member of the Henry Davison Youth Center and recently served on the church council of First Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids.
Volunteerism was a big part of Larry's life. He exemplified the Rotary mottos of "Service Above Self," "Mankind is our Business" and "Lend a Hand." Larry always sought ways to effect a smile, bring comfort, provide reassurance or extend a helping hand. He did not seek recognition for himself; his hope was that the kindness be passed along to others.
