Peg was born Oct. 16, 1935, in Eldora, Iowa, the oldest daughter of Margaret (Kearney) and Lawrence McNertney. She was the sister of Pat Roushar Ohsann of Fulton, Ill., and Larry McNertney (Launa) of Modesto, Calif.
Peg graduated from Eldora High School. She earned her nursing degree from Mercy College of Nursing in Iowa City. She met Dave Cahill in 1954 while in Iowa City and they were married in April 1957. They remained in Iowa City and raised six children. Peg worked at the Veterans Hospital and the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. She was a nurse for 42 years, retiring from the University of Iowa College of Medicine (Department of Surgery) in 1996. Peg was a loving, caring, compassionate person who smiled all the time and brought a smile to those around her.
Peg was an avid Iowa Hawkeye football fan, attending home football games and bowl games. She loved playing golf at the Elks Country Club with Dave or at Finkbine Golf Club with her friends. She enjoyed her weekly bridge group and having "PMS meetings" at the Hilltop. She was very passionate about her faith and the Catholic church and participated in daily mass at St. Mary's and the Newman Catholic Student Center in Iowa City. She loved being Irish and recently returned from a trip to Ireland with her brother, Larry and sister, Pat. The most important thing to Peg, however, was family and friends. She treasured the time and relationships she had with them.
Peg is survived by her daughter, Terri (Paul) Viken of Arlington Heights, Ill., and their four children, Don (Nadia) Viken, Dave (Shana) Viken, Maggie and Mick Viken, all of Arlington Heights; daughter, Shawn (Tom) Moore of Mount Prospect, Ill., and their four children, Tommy and Cody of Los Angeles and Megan and Shannon of Mount Prospect; son, David Cahill (partner Sarah Fletcher) of Iowa City; daughter, Julie (Dave) Leeney of Mount Prospect, Ill., their four children, Tricia and Derek of Iowa City and Katrina and Molly of Mount Prospect; and son, Timothy (Jamie) Cahill of Ann Arbor, Mich., and their four children, Kailee, Keegan, Kaden and Kenley.
Peg was blessed with three great-grandchildren, Will and Madison Viken of Arlington Heights, Ill., and Tyler Viken of Arlington Heights. Peg is also survived by her brother, Larry (Launa) McNertney of Modesto, Calif.
Peg was preceded in death by husband, William David "Tuck" Cahill; sister, Patricia "Pat" Roushar Ohsann; daughter, Patricia Cahill; and her parents.
