BARBARA J. (FITZPATRICK) DRISCOLL
Sun City West, Ariz.
Barbara J. (Fitzpatrick) Driscoll, 84, formerly of
Cedar Rapids and Woodland Hills, Calif., died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2016, at Grandview Care Center in Sun City West, Ariz., after a brief illness.
Barbara June was born May 7, 1931, the second daughter of James Thomas and Rena Sophia (Tarbox) Fitzpatrick in Albert Lea, Minn. She grew up in
Cedar Rapids and attended both Immaculate Conception Elementary and High School. Barbara was united in marriage with Lawrence B. Driscoll on Feb. 17, 1950, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids by Monsignor John M. Molloy. Barb and Larry moved to the Hollywood, Calif., area in 1952. In 1961, they built a home in Woodland Hills, Calif., and raised their two children, John Lawrence and
Michele "Darcy" Driscoll, there.
Barb worked for J.C. Penney for over 25 years as a department manager in Canoga Park, Calif. In 2006, she moved to Sun City West, Ariz., and made that her home until her death.
Barbara is survived by a daughter, Michele "Darcy" Meade of Camarillo, Calif.; a daughter-in-law, Lynn (Jon) Epperson; three grandchildren, Candace (Ryan) Handt, Tiffany
(Andrew) Zane and Sean
P. Driscoll, and a great-grandson, Jacob Handt, all currently living in the Simi Valley, Calif., area; a sister, Shirley A. (Fitzpatrick) May of Sun City West.; two brothers, Thomas A. (Joan) Fitzpatrick and Donie L. (Lola) Fitzpatrick, both of Cedar Rapids; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth "Betty" Fitzpatrick of Sun City West; and 25 nieces and nephews. Shirley's two sons, Kenneth and Brian May, were like second sons to Barb.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, James T. and Rena S. Fitzpatrick; her husband, Lawrence B. Driscoll (1925-1984); son, John L. Driscoll (1951-2004); brothers, James T. Driscoll Jr. (died 1990),
Irving J. Fitzpatrick (died 1990), Edward R. Fitzpatrick (died 2012), Leo L. Fitz-patrick (died 1998) and James B. Fitzpatrick (died at age 2 in 1941); a sister, Marguerite M. "Judy" Fitzpatrick (died 2011); three sisters-in-law, Eleanor (James T. Jr.),
Helen (Edward) and
Monica (Irving) Fitzpatrick; and brother-in-law, Lester (Shirley) May.
Barb loved her family. In her retirement you could frequently find her with her daughter, Darcy; her sister, Shirley; her brothers, Tom and Don; along with sisters-in-law, Betty, Joan and Lola. They might be visiting, playing games, shopping or spending a day at one of the nearby Phoenix-area casinos as Barb loved to play the slots. She was an excellent cook. Barb always had a cup of coffee and a plate of goodies ready whenever you stopped to see her. Barb and Shirley were especially close. They had lived next to each other for over 50 years while in California. When they retired, both moved to Sun City West and bought homes near each other.
Barb was loved by many and will be deeply missed.
Camino Del Sol Funeral Chapel & Cremation Center in Sun City West is responsible for arrangements.
A memorial will be at a later date.
