Kernels shut out at Kane County, 2-0

GENEVA, Ill. — The Kane County Cougars remained perfect in the early going of the Midwest League season, shutting out the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 2-0, Monday night in the first game of their three-game series.
Three pitchers combined on the eight-hitter for Kane County (5-0). Starter Ryan Atkinson allowed six hits and struck out 10 in 5 2/3 innings to get the win.
The Cougars' pitching staff has posted three shutouts in its last four games.
Starter Clark Beeker was very solid despite getting the loss for the Kernels (2-3). He went seven innings, allowing eight hits and single runs in the first and third innings.
Jermaine Palacios and Brandon Lopez had two hits apiece for Cedar Rapids. The Kernels stranded the bases loaded in the fourth inning, with Ben Rortvedt lining out to second base to end the frame.
The teams play again Tuesday night.
