FRED BURRELL
Madison, Ind.
Fred Burrell, 81, of Madison, Ind., passed away Monday, April 9, 2018, at his residence. Born Sept. 18, 1936, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, he was the son of Max W. and Harriett M. (Doty) Burrell.
Fred graduated from high school in Cedar Rapids and earned a bachelor's degree in American history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Following college, he immediately left the United States to study acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, England, returning to New York City in 1960.
He was a professional actor, performing in plays on Broadway and off-Broadway, including "Judgment at Nuremberg," "Inherit the Wind," "Never Too Late," and "Memorandum," in movies including "Klute," "Kinsey" and "We Own the Night," and in television on shows such as "Law & Order."
He was a member of the Church of the Holy Trinity, 88th Street, and formerly served as business manager, a member of the Vestry and a staff member, retiring in 2001. Fred also was a member of the Episcopal Actors' Guild of America, Screen Actors Guild, AFTRA and Actors' Equity.
On Jan. 1, 2000, he was united in marriage to India Cooper in the Church of the Holy Trinity, 88th Street, New York City.
After retiring from acting, he and his wife began traveling the United States. While traveling, they found Madison and eventually moved there in 2007.
Fred will be sadly missed by his wife, India; two sons, William "Barney" Lindsley and his wife, Jayaruwani, of Portland, Ore., and Michael Burrell of New York, N.Y.; one sister, Barbara Ravitz of Phoenix, Ariz.; his sons' mother, Mary Muir Burrell of New York, N.Y.; and three nieces, Kathleen, Sarah and Deborah.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Jane, in 1962; and his brother, David, earlier this year.
Memorial services will be held at a later date at the Church of the Holy Trinity, 316 E. 88th St., New York, N.Y. His cremated remains will be placed in a niche in the columbarium at the church following the service.
The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Episcopal Actors' Guild of America, 1 E. 29th St., New York, NY 10016. Contributions may be made at any of the Lytle Funeral Homes & Cremation Service locations.
