Double standard against I.C. sex shop plan

The local opposition to the opening of a woman-friendly “sex shop” in Iowa City is not surprising, but it is disappointing. There's an important comparison to be made here. “Adult shops” already in business cater to men, aren't woman- or couple-friendly, and sell products that are prime examples of the degradation and objectification of women; and yet they are considered an undeniable presence in our society.
Simultaneously, a shop that would teach about sexuality, challenge sexual taboos and accept women's sexuality as valid and important, is considered inappropriate for our supposedly progressive community.
This situation is just another way that society's refusal to acknowledge women as sexual beings in their own right raises its ugly, misogynistic head.
