The CEO of Agri Star Meat and Poultry in Postville plans to contribute three months of rental assistance to 18 downtown apartment residents displaced by a weekend fire.
Five apartments above a downtown bakery were destroyed in a Saturday morning blaze that was brought under control by firefighters from Postville and surrounding communities. Agri Star CEO Hershey Friedman announced that he will donate the cost of renting five apartments or houses for three months to the displaced residents.
“It is important to us that all of these individuals have a place to call home,” said Friedman, whose company bought the assets of the kosher meat processing company formerly known as Agriprocessors in August.
The money will go to the non-profit community-based Postville Response Coalition, which is locating housing for the fire victims, and will pay the rent directly to landlords.
