Daniel J. Ahern, 90, of Iowa City, passed away Friday, Oct. 28, 2016, at Parkview Manor, Wellman. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 3, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Iowa City, with the very Rev. Rudolph Juarez officiating. Per his request, Daniel donated his body to the University of Iowa Deeded Body Program. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society and American Heart Association.
Daniel was born Feb. 23, 1926, in Bernard, Iowa, the son of Dennis and Alice (Meehan) Ahern. He was a graduate of Maquoketa High School. Daniel served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946. He married Maria Flores on Aug. 23, 1958, in Maquoketa. They just celebrated their 58th anniversary. He was a custodian for the Iowa City Community School District for 28 years, retiring in 1994. Daniel was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. He was also a member for over 70 years of the VFW and American Legion 3633.
Daniel is survived by his wife, Maria; five children, Alonso (Becky) Flores of Des Moines, Reina (Dennis Lyne) Flores of Chandler, Ariz., Mary Ahern (John Corwin) of Eugene, Ore., Alma (Glenn) Anderson of Iowa City and William Ahern of North Liberty; six grandchildren, Christopher (Michelle) Flores of Ankeny, Gabriel (Colleen) of Des Moines, Elena Flores of Los Angeles, David (Mackenzie) Flores of Tacoma, Wash., Jackie Robinson of Iowa City and Miles Anderson of Iowa City; six great-grandchildren, Luka, Carolina, Harper, Eleanor, Henry and Charlie Flores; and many extended family.
Daniel was preceded in death by his parents and three siblings, Loras Ahern, Rita Amundsen and Evelyn Manderscheid.
