McDonald, Maria Elizabeth (Zuber)
Maria Elizabeth (Zuber) McDonald was born on May 8, 1921, in South Amana, Iowa, the daughter of William and Elizabeth (Reihman) Zuber, one of seven children. She was raised and educated there until she married Charles Wade McDonald in 1946. Wade and Marie lived their life together in Iowa County, chiefly in and around North English, Iowa. There they had seven children and farmed, until they retired in 1972.
Marie was a positive, supportive community member. Since her marriage, she belonged to St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Altar and Rosary Society. She was a volunteer for the Cancer Society, collecting funds on their behalf every year. She enjoyed membership in the B Natural women's club, and often visited friends and neighbors at the English Valley Care Center. Her sweet, fun-loving nature insured that she had many cherished friendships, and that she was a much-beloved sister, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Marie died on Saturday morning, July 31, 2010, at Colonial Manor of Amana. She was 89. She had resided in Middle Amana, at Lakeview Village.
Marie is survived by her sister, Louise Zuber of Middle Amana; and her brother, Jack Zuber of Hiawatha, Iowa. Her children are Charles McDonald and wife Kay of Marion, Dan McDonald and wife Donna of South Amana, David McDonald and wife Mary of Cedar Rapids, Mary Taft and husband Peter of Iowa City, Ben McDonald and wife Cindy of Lutz, Fla., Elizabeth Ketabian and husband Rassoul of Carlsbad, Calif., and Ed McDonald of Marengo. Her grandchildren are Kelly McDonald Macek, Maureen McDonald, Margaret McDonald-Hansen, Molly and Patrick McDonald, Machelle and Michael McDonald, Jacob, Joshua and Emily McDonald, Eleanore and Sophia Taft, Laura and Robert McDonald, and Sheila, Shahin and Armon Ketabian. Her great-grandchildren are Ava and Annabelle Macek, Audrey and Olivia Scheel, and Shelby and Aiden Hansen.
Funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in North English. Father Joseph Roost will officiate. Burial will be at St. Bernards Cemetery, near Millersburg. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English, where there will be a prayer service at 7 p.m.
Memorials are for the Marengo Memorial Hospital.
