Championship Friday at the Iowa high school state softball tournament came to an end at 1:18 a.m. Saturday.
Weather delayed action throughout the day, but all five championship games were played. Here's a look at the scores, plus links to stories and highlights involving Gazette area teams.
Class 3A: No. 1 Davenport Assumption 8, No. 7 Albia 0
Nicole Timmons struck out 20 batters in 6 2/3 innings, allowing only three hits and two walks as Assumption rolled to the 3A title in the final game of the night.
The Knights scored all eight runs on eight hits in the third inning. They outscored their three state tournament opponents 55-1.
Class 2A: No. 5 Iowa City Regina 5, No. 6 Eddyville EBF 4
After EBF broke a 1-1 deadlock with three runs in the top of the 16th, Regina rallied with four in the bottom half for an incredible win that ended past 11 p.m.
Regina's Sarah Lehman set a state tournament record with 22 strikeouts. It's the Regals' second title in three years.
Class 1A: No. 1 Lansing Kee 8, No. 3 Clarksville 1
Kee won its second straight 1A title, out-hitting Clarksville 9-1.
The Hawks upset Akron-Westfield 7-3 last year, but were the clear favorites here. Pitcher Kendra Cooper was named all-tournament captain after allowing just one hit. The Indians committed five errors.
Class 5A: No. 7 Pleasant Valley 8, No. 1 Waukee 2
The Spartans are the first non-CIML team to win the state's large-class softball title since fellow MVC school North Scott in 2002.
PV jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning, thanks in part to three Waukee errors.
Class 4A: No. 1 Winterset 5, No. 3 Ballard 2
Winterset won its second state softball title and first since 2008, downing a Raccoon River Conference foe in the final.
Natalie Hansen was 2-for-3 and drove in three runs. Macy Johnson went 3-for-3 and scored a run.
