Alice M. Kelley, 96, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and formerly of Independence, Iowa, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2018, at Heritage Specialty Care Center in Cedar Rapids.
She was born March 22, 1921, in Aurora, Iowa, the daughter of Christopher and Mae (Hass) Werner. She was raised in rural Aurora, and was a 1940 graduate of Aurora High School. On April 7, 1942, she married the love of her life, George Edward Kelley, at St. James Episcopal Church in Independence. They made their home just outside of Independence on a farm that the family rented, and raised their children there until George passed away in 1965. Alice started working at the Mental Health Institute in Independence, and later she worked as a cook at People's Memorial Hospital. She worked for the hospital for 15 years, and retired in 1988.
Alice is survived by her children, Carole (Stanley) McGaffee of Cedar Rapids, Melvin Kelley (Connie Plower) of Austin, Texas, and Michael Kelley of Kansas City, Mo.; a sister-in-law, Delpha Werner of Council Bluffs, Iowa; five grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George; one son, Marvin Kelley; three brothers, Donald Werner, Edwin Werner and John Werner; and two sisters, Della Black and Mabel Van Vooren.
Funeral services will take place Saturday, Jan. 27, at 11 a.m. at Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence, with Sharon Bainbridge officiating. Burial will be held at St. John's Catholic Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until services on Saturday.
