Phyllis Ann Irwin, 91, of Iowa City, passed peacefully on Thursday, June 9, 2016, at Mercy Iowa City, surrounded by her loving family. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, June 13, at Lensing Funeral Service, 605 Kirkwood Ave., Iowa City. A private family burial will follow at a later date in Oakland Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Arc of Southeast Iowa or Camp Courageous.
Phyllis was born Nov. 3, 1924, in Goldfield, Iowa, the daughter of Otto and Anna (Duitscher) Matson. She attended the University of Iowa for two years and one year at Hamilton Business College.
Phyllis was united in marriage to Robert Irwin on June 6, 1947, in Kansas City, Kan. He preceded her in death on March 19, 2001. She worked at the University of Iowa College of Business as an office coordinator for 22 years, retiring in 1990. Phyllis was a member of The Arc of Johnson County.
Phyllis enjoyed cheering on the Hawkeye football and basketball teams. She was an avid reader and mastered the computer during her retirement years, using email to stay in touch with her many friends. In her younger years after retirement, she enjoyed lunches with her many friends and attending Red Hat meetings. Also, she enjoyed her vacations in California visiting relatives and attending the Rose Bowl in 1986.
Phyllis is survived by her two children, Bob Irwin of Iowa City and Melissa (Bill) Detweiler and their son, Matthew, of Ames.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert; and daughter, Melinda Irwin.
