Marshall “Matt” A. Matejcek, 81, of 417 Owen St. NW, Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2009, at St. Luke's Hospital following a short illness. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. The Rev. Randy Kasch of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church will officiate. Inurnment will take place at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Lenore; daughters, Beth Bartels and husband Brent of Olathe, Kan., Lori Winder and husband Mark of Mount Vernon, and Sally Miller and husband Jeff of Muscatine; and his grandchildren, Aaron and Kara Bartels, Ryan and Matt Winder and Cole, Kaylie and Paige Miller.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one brother.
Marshall Alan “Matt” Matejcek was born March 18, 1928, in Owatonna, Minn., the son of Otto and Louise (Weiler) Matejcek. He graduated from Owatonna High School. He received his B.A. from Mankato State University, and later his Master's Degree from Iowa State Teacher's College. He was involved in football and hockey during his school years and is in both the Mankato State and Owatonna High School sports hall of fame. He served his country honorably in the United States Army during World War II. He was united in marriage to Lenore Johnson on August 22, 1953. He was employed as a teacher and coach at several schools in Iowa. He was employed from 1967 to 1990 at Roosevelt Junior High as a guidance counselor and coach of several sports.
Matt enjoyed sports, especially the Minnesota Twins and Vikings. He also was a fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes. He was a member of the Iowa State Teachers Association. He enjoyed vacationing in Florida as well as northern Minnesota. Above all, his greatest enjoyment was time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren and attending their many activities.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the fund established in Matt's honor.
