McVay, Wayne Everett
PALO - Wayne Everett McVay, 83, of Palo, died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2010, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 4, at Teahen Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids by Pastor John Howerton of Palo United Methodist Church. The burial will take place following the service at the Palo Cemetery. Friends may call or visit Sunday, Oct. 3, from 2 to 6 p.m. at Teahen Funeral Home and again after 9:30 a.m. on Monday.
Wayne is survived by his wife, Norma; his daughter, Carol (John) Dix of Palo; grandchildren, Angela (Danny) Kaiser, David (Brenda) McVay, Tammi (Mike) Kuba, Becky McVay, Trisca (Jeff) Smetzer, Raymond Dix and Robert (Stacy) Dix; 19 great-grandchildren; and sister, Maxine (Lauren) Gibney of Palo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Gary McVay; sister, Violet Armstrong; and brother-in-law, Dale Armstrong.
Wayne was born Sept. 25, 1927, in Palo, the son of Ollie and Everett McVay. He graduated from Palo High School in 1944. Wayne married Norma Jean Rawson on Nov. 10, 1945.
Wayne was a small-business owner for many years, operating the Palo Locker and Waydens Heavy Haulers. He was a 50-year member of the Masonic Benton City Lodge No. 81 AF&AM, Cedar Chapter Eastern Star and El Kahir Shrine Center. Wayne loved fishing, traveling, and spending time in the woods looking for mushrooms and blackberries.
He was a very talented woodworker and created many cherished heirloom furniture pieces for friends and family.
Wayne served his community as a volunteer, Boy Scout leader, Palo City member, and a 27-year board member for the Palo Cooperative Telephone Association.
Wayne was a wonderful caring man, a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, who will be deeply missed by all.
Instead of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Palo United Methodist Church Building Fund, Palo Cemetery Association, or the charity of the donor's choice.
